Nobel Prize Winners List 2023
What are the Nobel Prizes?
Alfred Nobel, a prosperous entrepreneur, inventor, and chemist from Sweden during the 19th century, was the visionary behind the establishment of the Nobel Prizes. In his final will and testament, Nobel stipulated that his wealth should be used to bestow “prizes to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.”
The inaugural Nobel Prizes were conferred in 1901, five years after Nobel’s passing. He designated specific institutions to oversee the awards in various fields: the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for Chemistry and Physics, the Swedish Academy for Literature, Sweden’s Karolinska Institute for Physiology or Medicine, and the Norwegian Parliament for Peace.
In 1968, the Sveriges Riksbank (Sweden’s central bank) introduced the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, which adheres to the same principles as the other Nobel Prizes. While there is some debate among purists about whether the Economics Prize is a true Nobel Prize, it is now presented alongside the other Nobel Prizes.
