Geographical Indications or GI Tags are an important component of intellectual property rights (IPRs) that makes sure to give a specific tag to a certain product based on their geographical features. GI tags are given to make sure the products are not used by anyone or any other region illegally. It gives a specific right of isolation to a specific product. What are GI Tags in India?
A GI or Geographical Indication tag is a sign or name given to certain products belonging to a specific geographical origin and possesses origin-based qualities and reputation in the region. GI tag represents that the product belongs to the specific area or region and contains the cultural heritage of the specific region. The tags are given to foodstuffs, handicrafts, wine and spirit drinks, industrial products, and agricultural products. The first product to be accorded with GI tag in India was Darjeeling tea in the year 2004-05.
List of geographical indications (GI) Tags in India
The GI tags are provided as per the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act,1999. GI tags are issued by the Geographical Indication Registry under the Department of Industry Promotion and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
