The list of National Sports Awards 2020 Winners has been announced by the Government. For this year 2020, 27 Sportspersons have been selected for the Arjuna Award for four years consistent outstanding performance. 

The winners will receive their awards from the President Ram Nath Kovind at a specially organized function through virtual mode from Rashtrapati Bhawan on 29th of this month which is National Sports Day. It coincides with the birthday of legendary hockey Olympian, Dhyan Chand.

NATIONAL SPORTS AWARDS 2020

  • National Sports Awards are conferred every year to recognize and reward excellence in sports.
  • The Government of India has announced the list of winners of the National Sports Awards 2020, as per the recommendation of the Selection Committee headed by Justice (Retd.) Mukundakam Sharma (former Judge of Supreme Court of India).
  • They will receive the award on National Sports Day on August 29.
  • This is for the first time that 5 players have been selected for this award.

National Sports Awards 2020 – Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Winner:

  • The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, officially known as Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in Sports and Games, is the highest sporting honour of the Republic of India.
  • Instituted in 1991–1992, this award is being conferred for the spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports by a sportsperson over a period of four years.
  • It is awarded annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
  • The award comprises a medallion, a certificate, and a cash prize of ₹7.5 lakh.
  • The first recipient of the award was Chess Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand, who was honoured for the performance in the year 1991–92.
  • In 2001, sport shooter Abhinav Bindra, then aged 18, became the youngest recipient of the award.

ARJUNA AWARD 2020 Winners:

  • The Arjuna Awards are given by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India to recognize outstanding achievement in sports.
  • Started in 1961, the award carries a cash prize of ₹5,00,000, a bronze statue of Arjuna and a scroll. It is the Oldest National Sports Award in India.
  • This award is being conferred for consistent outstanding performance in the field of sports by a sportsperson over a period of four years.
  • Since the year 2001, the award is given only in disciplines falling under the following categories:
  • Olympic Games / Asian Games / Commonwealth Games / World Cup / World Championship Disciplines and Cricket
  • Indigenous Games
  • Sports for the Physically Challenged
  • 27 sportsperson have been selected for the ARJUNA AWARD 2020.
  • Saleem Durani being the first cricketer to be conferred with the award in 1961.

DRONACHARYA AWARD 2020 Winners:

  • The Dronacharya Award, officially known as Dronacharya Award for Outstanding Coaches in Sports and Games,is a sports coaching honour of the Republic of India.
  • The award is named after Drona, often referred as “Dronacharya” or “Guru Drona”, a character from the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata of ancient India.
  • Instituted in 1985, the award is given only to the disciplines included in the events like Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championship and World Cup along with Cricket, Indigenous Games, and Parasports.
  • It is awarded annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
  • The award comprises a bronze statuette of Dronacharya, a certificate, ceremonial dress, and a cash prize of ₹5 lakh.

DHYAN CHAND AWARD 2020 Winners:

  • The Dhyan Chand Award, officially known as Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime Achievement in Sports and Games, is the lifetime achievement sporting honour of the Republic of India.
  • Instituted in 2002, the award is given only to the disciplines included in the events like Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championship and World Cup along with Cricket, Indigenous Games, and Parasports.
  • The award is named after Dhyan Chand (1905–79), an Indian field hockey player who scored more than 1000 goals during a career which spanned over 20 years from 1926 to 1948.
  • It is awarded annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
  • As of 2019, the award comprises a statuette, a certificate, ceremonial dress, and a cash prize of ₹5 lakh.
  • The first three awardees of the Dhyan Chand award are Aparna Ghosh in the field of basketball, Ashok Diwan and Shahuraj Birajdar in the fields of hockey and boxing.

RASHTRIYA KHEL PROTSAHAN PURUSKAR 2020 Winners:

  • The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports has introduced the Scheme of Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar.
  • This scheme was introduced by the government in 2009 to encourage involvement of corporates and sports promotion boards in the development of sports in the country.
  • This award is being conferred to the corporate entities (both in private and public sector) as well as individuals who have played a visible role in the area of sports promotion and its development.
