What is a Bird Sanctuary?
“Bird sanctuary” can mean a few different things:
- A place with a protected bird habitat. Typically, “sanctuary” implies that hunting is prohibited. (In the U.S., this is different from a “wildlife refuge,” which typically has protected habitat and limited public access, but may allow hunting.) Bird sanctuaries may be owned and administered by government agencies or non-profit organizations.
- An organization dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating birds. These may be unwanted or abused pet birds, in which case the sanctuary typically provides a home for those who are not suitable for adoption because of behavioral or medical issues. They may also be wild birds, as in the World Bird Sanctuary.
- In the U.S. state of North Carolina, under state law, any city may designate itself a “bird sanctuary.” All that means is that bird hunting is prohibited within city limits; it does not mean that the city protects birds or bird habitat in any other way. As a result, it’s common to see “bird sanctuary” signs when driving through North Carolina.
Sanctuaries in India
Wildlife sanctuaries are established by IUCN category IV protected areas. India has 543 wildlife sanctuaries referred to as wildlife sanctuaries category IV protected areas. Among these, the 50 tiger reserves are governed by Project Tiger and are of special significance in the conservation of the tiger. Some wildlife sanctuaries are specifically named bird sanctuary, e.g., Keoladeo National Park before attaining National Park status.
Many of them being referred to as a particular animal such as Jawai leopard sanctuary in Rajasthan. Many National Parks were initially wildlife sanctuaries. The conservative measures taken by the Indian Government for the conservation of Tigers was awarded by a 30% rise in the number of tigers in 2015.
